I think it varies widely by person and by the type of excursion. Although I have to admit, I am somewhat unsure about tipping "professionals" such as pilots and boat captains. But if the tour operators are the owners, I don't feel the need to tip them since they have the power to price the tour to compensate for their work.

Most Canadians do tip. I won't get into dollar amount details, but we factor in substantial US cash when travelling in order to tip. We have to purchase US cash from our bank, and we have a variety of line items to get to the total amount of actual cash we need. And the entire amount for tipping seems to get distributed. We will do without an afternoon snack, and skip wine with dinner, in order to cover the appropriate tips.

There doesn't seem to be a hard and fast rule. So I'll just share what we did, and you can figure out what makes sense to you.
