Routine maintenance is so important in boating but sometimes things break when not expected. We were on our way out with a family to Horn Island from Biloxi, MS when the throttle cable disconnected on the starboard engine.
This was not expected since everything checked ok when we prepped the boat earlier that day. When we came back to the marina and opened the hatch we saw not only a loose cable but 2 feet of water! Lucky for us the cable came loose because what really went wrong was the packing around the footing of the drive shaft came loose and we were taking on water whenever we moved forward.
Thank God for the loose cable or we would have been towed back from Horn Islamd that day. Trips to Horn Island have begun! Beautiful sunsets start with clean air. Air molecules are then scattered by the particles of dust and water in the air. The spectrum of light that we can see in the atmosphere go from violets and blues to reds and oranges. Because our eyes are more sensitive to blue, we see blue skies during the day.
When skies have more pollutants, such as over big cities, skies appear grey or white during the day. During sunrise and sunset, light rays have a longer path to take and they become more scattered. So at these times of the day we see red and orange glows. Now mix in clouds. Clouds bring in another filter which the light must pass through. When blue light reflects off of the clouds and mixes with the red light that is present in the morning and evenings, you get a beautiful pink and lavender sky.
Because of the humidity and clouds that are brought in by the Gulf, these rare pink and lavender sunsets occur quite frequently.
After collecting these little guys we placed them back in the water along with the hermit crabs and sting rays! We saw 3 dolphin following a shrimp boat, 6 more circling Horn Island and 4 more in the channel when we returned to the Biloxi Boardwalk Marina.
I thought this would be a good topic because, yes, we suffered from a broken drive shaft just prior to the 4th of July weekend! How it happened Ted and I went on a Sunday cruise, just the two of us, and decided to stay in the back bay and go by Grasshopper Island and anchor. As we motored up the channel all was good!
So Ted turned off the motors and dove under the boat to check out what happened. He said. All we new is that we were down to just the port engine, which is the new engine, so it could have been worse.
An hour and a half later we made the 30 min trip back to the marina and had an interesting time trying to back the 36ft boat back into the slip. It was pretty breezy by then. How it was fixed 3 weeks later the boat was repaired and ready to go. Since the drive shaft broke 3 days before the Fourth of July weekend we had to wait until the next week before we could get a lift out of the water and our damage assessed. The insurance claim went through quickly but we had to wait another week until the machine shop could come and measure the boat and make a new shaft.
Our boat is a Cruisers Yacht and the company said they no longer had records on what size drive shaft we needed. That sounded kinda fishy to me. So during the third week the machine shop helped Ted remove the other propellor, we found a used match, and they installed the new shaft and propellor.
Now that we have been through this we can shorten the repair time by calling the machine shop since they already know what size we need and have them make one. The weather was beautiful and we got to see the many exhibits and climb aboard the numerous power and sailboats. Come check this out! The north wind also blew the tide out so many boats were grounded during low tide. With temperatures dropping below freezing we put a light on in the engine compartment to keep it from freezing.
