This was one of the attractions included with our citypass - a choice between a harbour cruise or Ellis Island. The Harbour Lights was definitely an amazing experience. The cruise departs at 7pm, but people are lining up for good seats as early as pm. We were fairly far back in the line, but still got excellent seats. We took this tour in the second week of October, so we got about thirty minutes of daylight when the cruise left EXACTLY at 7pm, plus we got to see a spectacular sunset over New Jersey.
We spent the rest of the cruise admiring the beautiful lights of Manhattan, and the iconic skyline. Our guide was wonderful! He was extremely knowledgeable about the history of New York, and was up to date with topical information. He regaled us with information about the iconic architecture, and even with celebrity gossip! He was pretty darn funny too. Remember to tip your guide, he really turned the dial up to eleven and made the cruise perfect.
The captain takes the boat past the Statue of Liberty, allowing both sides of the boat to get photos, which I thought was pretty considerate. Overall, I loved this cruise and am so glad we took it.
I definitely recommend taking jackets, scarves etc. The inside seating area is heated, and Harbor Sightseeing Cruise New York Food very cosy, but if you want to sit outside and take photos, you'll need jackets and gloves.
It's freezing!!!! A fantastic way to see the City and more. The 3 hour full island loop took us further than we would have ventured on land, and was very memorable. Masses of great photo opportunities, and a very informative guide to talk you throught the sights, history, etc. We went in October, and it was quite cold when we were out of the sun, so wrap up if you're not going in Summer.
If you are in New York for a few days, this is a 'must-do'. This is a great way to quickly see The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island if you don't have the time to actually stop and see everything. It still takes three hours, though. The boats held a lot of people so even though we were very far back in line, we still got on the first of three boats docked.
The guide was very funny and knowledgable. I'm not entirely sure how much tickets cost considering we got free tickets through our bus tours but I'm sure they're worth it.
Or at least not in the dead of Winter. Anyway this was overall a nice thing to do. My wife and I took the 2 hour cruise. It took forever to get on but once the boat got going the views were great.
Our cruise was interrupted many times by a group of passengers making as much noise as they possibly could. The tour guide did his best to shut them up but short of throwing them overboard there's only so much you can do with ignorant people bent on ruining everybody's day.
That aside I would do this again and recommend it to people. I really enjoyed the 3-hour cruise and was glad I chose this rather than the Staten Island ferry. We passed the ferry and saw it moves very quickly; you get much better photos from a slow moving boat! The commentary was interesting and informative and we got to see parts of Manhattan we wouldn't have otherwise, as the boat follows the river past Brooklyn, up to Harlem and down the other side.
We did not book in advance but arrived about 35 minutes before the sailing on a Monday - it would probably be busier at the weekend and were glad we did, as it meant we got good seats on the left hand side of the boat while some people had to sit downstairs. In all, a great way to spend a sunny morning. This is a great way to see Manhattan Island, all the bridges and the Statue of Liberty. The guided tour is informative and funny. We learned a lot. I will recommend this to anyone I know planning a trip to New York City.
