Build a Wooden Boat - DIY - MOTHER EARTH NEWS.

The light weight of the boat 20kg hull weight only has been achieved by using the latest polyethylene moulding technology with a layer of polyethylene foam in between two poylethylene skins. The thickness makes the boat stiff and the foam makes it light. The combination makes it unsinkable. It is this light weight that transforms this training boat into an exhilarating rowing boat. And it has the added benefit that the boat is very easy to handle when out of the water.

It is light enough for one person to pick up and carry comfortably, even when fully rigged. Short boats can be difficult to keep going in a straight line. Early "play boats" suffered from this problem. Racing boats are long and thin but still require a fin underneath, near the stern to keep them straight. This fin means that you cannot put a racing boat down on the ground carelessly. The TS training scull has slim longitudinal runners underneath it and a built in skeg that give it excellent straight line stability whilst making it invulnerable to damage when placed on the ground.

The patented, fully adjustable, quick release rigger system means that the TS can be assembled in less than a minute. No tools required. The matching boat cradles mean that the training sculls can be stacked up to the ceiling. Quickly remove the rigger and the boats can alternatively be stored alongside other TS sculls on racks where, previously, only one boat could be stored, a great space saver in a crowded boat shed.

The combined weight of this crew is 20 stone or kg so you see that when the oarlocks are set at their maximum height the TS is capable of accommodating even the biggest of single scullers!

The fact that the oarlocks may be lowered means that this rowing boat is eminently suitable for children too, of course. In fact many schools have taken on the TS Training Scull for teaching as it fulfills their duty of care obligation. Most children exhibit less fear than their parents do.

But not everybody is a fast and fearless learner. Either way the removal of fear greatly aids learning and kids make rapid progress and really enjoy themselves. Parents meantime are more relaxed. I jumped in and without adjusting anything I felt like I was sculling in a boat that I was already familiar with. It was like wearing an old slipper.

Everything about the way the rig has been set up felt right. The stretcher angle is the best I've come across. My heels never left the stretcher. This has been a gripe of mine for many a year, that boat builders never build enough adjustment into stretchers to achieve a good position for the feet. For many, many years, before long slides came in, rowers and scullers managed with clogs.

The only reason that flexible shoes were introduced was because the rigs were all wrong when extremely long slides were experimented with in the early 70s and people's feet used to fall out of the heel traps. The TS has quite plainly been designed by somebody who is an expert in sculling. The height of the gates above the water give rise to a lovely, level, direct draw of the hands.

The boat does not pitch perceptibly and it runs beautifully. In fact after I'd sculled past the boat houses at Putney on the day of the Veterans Head of the River Race, Peter Haining, three times World Champion in lightweight single sculls, came down to tell me that he had been watching and that he thought the TS Training Scull ran beautifully off the finish.

He sang the praises of the stabiliser system, pointing out how it would encourage novice scullers to reach further out and to pull further through thus lengthening their strokes into those areas where one feels most vulnerable in a racing boat. He loved it. I love it. This is the first training boat that I have stepped into that has given me the same thrill that I got from a fine boat all those years ago when I first tried one.

This is what we should be putting children and novices out in so as to enthuse them. So not only is it well engineered, practical and affordable, it's a great scull. I cannot recommend it highly enough. I have been away for 2 weeks so I have only just been out in my new TS I did take the precaution of wearing a life jacket on my first outing as our river is deep and cold this time of year but after a few strokes I came back in took of the life jacket and set off up the river.

As I had not been in a boat for 18 years it was a shaky start but I was enjoying it so much I rowed at least a mile up river and back. Great boat and I am enjoying it. Edon is fantastic, and the oars, being adjustable and light are a pleasure to use. This morning after about 30 mins I had got a reasonable stroke going and covered the ground about twice the speed of my kayak!

That, when I had never before rowed with a sliding seat and I did not fall in! Another hour and I feel that I am starting to get the hang of it with much to learn. I am truly delighted with the Edon. I feel safe but at the same time get the excitement of speed, acceleration, good tracking and manoeuvreability. A great boat. Finally I was sculling with the Edon TS! A terrific experience. You know, I've never seen a scull boat before, so at beginning I was a little afraid, but assembling the rigger was really easy.

I did it in 10 seconds, not more. After 2 hours of exercise on the water, to learn the first boat handling methods which I've only read on the internet before, today I covered a distance of 10km. I've still a lot of thing to learn, however it was a nice first try. The boats have proved to be a great success - and in the words of our Junior Coach, "The best money the club has ever spent".

The training sculls are very popular indeed - they have been excellent for our new junior members with the outriggers on, and the senior novice scullers have been enjoying using them too. Definitiely a good purchase! Hallo Stephen, I am very happy to be able to tell you that I mounted the cams succesfully and was rowing this morning on my dear River IJssel.

And I can tell you it was a pleasure. The boat is rowing very smoothly and moves faster than I had expected. So here is a very content client thanking you and sending you best greetings!

My Thames Row turned out a bit different from expectations. I got halfway but a combination of pretty bad weather too late in the season , very few lock keepers on duty and very little boat traffic meant that on my own I simply could not do the distance to get to London in the time available.

Had three good days rowing, got halfway Goring but took decision to complete the row in more benign conditions next year. Also weight load had to be carried mainly on deck so boat felt quite unstable, particularly in strong following winds. Put stabilisers back on and all was well - which was just as well I had them on because some of the early locks are very narrow and I had some interesting passages through half open gates.

Plus a lot of trees down after gales - I ran into several of them above Oxford. In those circumstances stabilisers are a great blessing, no matter how competent a sculler you consider yourself to be! With the load I had on deck the likelihood of tipping in at locks or while tangling with fallen branches is high - stabilisers give you the safety margin.

Once again, a real testimony to the many qualities of the TS Furthermore, hauling the fully loaded boat out of the water at various campsites, up steep banks, on one occasion through a screen of trees, shows how remarkably tough and hard wearing the boat is. You simply could not go where I have been in anything less robust than the TS We have been using the TS for all our L2R and novice groups week in and week out for years.

Tough, stable and therefore ideal for beginners, they are also fun to row. They get a lot of use and when things do need repairing we always get fast, friendly and efficient service from Steve at Ahoy Boats.

Highly recommended. I thought I should mention that the reason I didn't really need to discuss my order with you is that it's the second TS that I have bought from you. I got the first one a couple of years back as a complete novice to sculling. I have found it a great way of beginning to Best Rowing Boats For Exercise Words learn to scull, even though I haven't yet been able to put as much time into it as I would have liked.

Unfortunately for me, my wife has taken to it in a big way too, and is now way better at it than me! She spends all her time on the water and I don't get a look in. Hence the need for the second boat, to see if I can catch up! We did think about getting a more conventional, thinner, fibreglass scull, or even a Nordic Explorer but I thought I'd mention the other big reason we decided to go with another TS That's that we have to launch off quite a rough concrete slipway into a tidal river.

The bottom of the boat takes quite a battering in launching and landing especially from me and so far has stood up to it very well. I think we'd have quite a few holes now in a fancy boat. Anyway, thought that might be of interest to you, and am look forward to getting the new boat.

I'm pleased to say I am very satisfied with this boat! I just wanted to say a massive thank you for helping us. The blades are great and the boat is so much easier to teach basic sculling technique on our Chichester Canal. Within the space of a week, we have managed to offer more regular water sessions for my club and they enjoy using this boat! We will be interested in getting back in contact in the next upcoming few months to see if we can order a few more - once we have made more room.

Once again thank you and we shall continue to stay in touch! Hi Steve - thought I would update you on my progress having my new TS on the water for the first time this week. Fantastic and just as I thought such a great way to keep up my fitness levels when not able to windsurf due to lack of wind.
