When I first bought this one, I listened to the CD once at home on my very, very nice system and was deeply impressed. Not only is the songwriting and playing superb, but the sound quality is up to that same level. The guitars just ring with that honest sound you get from a well made acoustic guitar. The playing has that "favorite, most comfortable flannel shirt" sort of feel. The more you listen to it, the more you enjoy it. You can't say that about a lot of music today.
Out on the open road, I was listening to this disc and on came Ramblin' Jack and Mahan. I'll bet I played that song four times in a row if I played it once I've found you can't listen to this one "Too Much" Boats to Build is one of my favorite songs and the album has a lot of amazing finger picking, mandolin and other rootsy, Texas-style instrumental accompaniment, along with Clark's voice, which evokes whiskey and cigarettes, but in a good way..
He has a lot of old-school wisdom and weathered character, leavened with a shot of dark humor and some lyrical poetry for good measure. I was kind of hoping the rest of the songs were going to measure up with 'boats' but not so much.
Worth a listen! Each song grabs you. Growing up in Southeast Texas on the coast, Boats to Build really hits home, but I love his use of metaphors. These songs are rich. This is one of my all time favorite CDs. Classic Guy Clark with the title track stealing the show. It's an uplifting recording similar to his earlier works. The band on the CD is stellar as is his songwriting. Can't go wrong with this one! One person found this helpful. Definitely one of his best! I may be biased by being a Guy Clark fan, but-this truely is his best work..
Every song is a gem. He carefully crafted a distinct mood and flavor that makes this Cd ebb and flow with a gentle current of lyric and melody. My only complaint is that it doesn't go on forever. See all reviews.
