Check your tire pressure with a quality gauge. Most motorists believe radials are better and they are for your auto. Should you buy them for your trailer? Bias ply tires have stiffer sidewalls, so if your rig tends to sway, they may help reduce this problem. They also have advantages for carrying heavy loads. Radials, as most of us know, are vastly superior for tread wear.

However, oxidation, not tread wear, wears out trailer tires. Radial tires are also less prone to developing flat spots on one side when they are parked in the same position for weeks at a time, and tend to run cooler on long trips.

Choosing a Trailer Jack. Safe and Trouble-Free Trailering. Selecting Trailer Brakes. Selecting a Trailer Winch. Before you go heading down the road, how old are the tires? If you don't know, or don't know why you need to know, then Bass Boat Trailer Tire Pressure Sensor watch this:. All trailer tires should be inflated to the maximum reading on the sidewall.

Fill them when the tire is cold first thing before you run them any distance. Heat build up is what causes tires to fail. Also maximum load capacity is always achieved at max pressure. Glenn is right tires do have a shelf life and old tires with acceptable tread depth can still be dangerous. I have read that if you are going to exceed the maximum speed limit of the tires you can inflate the tires to 5 psi over the max pressure.

I did that for five years without a problem, until I felt a vibration when I got above 50 mph. I stopped and looked at the tires and nothing seemed askew, so I continued driving and the vibration got worse.

Pulled into a rest area, jacked each tire free of the ground, rotated each and found one to be seriously out of round and distorted. Broken belt in one of the tires. Changed the tire and off I went. Finished the long trip, got home without further problem. Went fishing around here a few days later, and on the way home the trailer developed a vibration.

Turned out to be the mate to the first tire that failed on the tandem trailer. Ok, I have about lbs. My tires state 60 lbs. Do I still have to put 60 lbs.

I believe at highway speeds my trailer would be doing some serious bouncing around. Boat-trailer tires require a lot of air pressure in most cases, between 50 and 65 psi. In fact, the correct pressure is almost always the maximum-rated pressure for that tire, which is molded right on the sidewall.

Maintaining that pressure is critically important to towing safety. Tire pressure determines the load the tire can safely carry. The load capacity of the trailer was determined with that specific tire pressure as a factor. If you roll out of the driveway towing your boat with less than the max psi in the trailer tires, you have effectively reduced the load capacity of the entire trailer. Underinflated and thus overloaded tires are the leading cause of trailer-tire failure; the tires overheat and fall apart.

Yes you need 60 lbs. Under inflating a tire will cause heat build up. Thanks muchly guys! I knew I was correct and that the air supply machine was either screwed up, or not allowing for over inflation of car tires. The tire manufacturer would not put 60 psi max on the side of the tire if it should not be Bass Boat Trailer Tire Pressure Map inflated to that pressure.

And BTW, at lbs, their is virtually zero bulge of the side walls below the rim. However, my buddy the tire pro, says if the tires are rated for 60 lbs max, he would run lbs, regardless of the load being ran on them Oh, and I have been getting about 15K to 20K miles per set, which doesn't seem bad for a little 12" wheel. I bet they turn as many rotations as my truck would in 30K to 40K miles!

What's your personal opinion? I just don't see any big advantages to running any more lbs than I have been. PS, How many guys actually wear the treads off of their light duty trailer tires, vs.

Boats like that need to be given to somebody who's going to use them! If you're not experiencing any kind of uneven wear or stress I wouldn't worry about it.

If it ain't broke don't fix it. I'm on my 2nd set, I keep them 50psi which is max. Never had uneven wear and had 1 blowout after 5 years which is when I replaced them.

No major problems. Can't say that had anything to do with running 30 lbs, instead of 50 lbs though. I figured I might have just nailed a pot hole, or clipped a good sized rock, or obstacle Listen to your buddy. All tire run there coolest when inflated to maximum pressure. Heat kills. Maximum air pressure also carries maximum load ratings. I was in the tire business for over 20 years.

Good advice. Heat would be my concern. Heat can actually make the rubber become harder which can lead to all kinds of problems
