Re: Jon Boat Build The first thing that I did quarteryl start this project is was to build 3 saw horses so that I would not have to work down on the floor. I got the design from the internet.

I wanted to build a simple boat and I liked the Jon boat design except I wanted it to be less box like. In the area where I live it can flood, and this boat can carry pounds. I chose a design that has a transom that is not perpendicular to the flat. I wanted the boat to be large enough for two adults. I increased those to 16 inches I could get all 4 pieces for the sides out of one sheet of ply. This is a typical Jon boat. I bought my plans from one of the big companies that sell plans for these boats.

I wanted a boat that I could just shove into my van. The width of the van is one of the considerations in picking a design. I wanted one 4 feet 1. Mine will be 4 osn wide. The first thing I had to do was scarf two pieces of ply. The length was supposed to be 12 feet but will end up build my own jon boat quarterly I always dreaded having to make a scarf joint. This time I had to do it. I did not have an electric plane so I used a piece of 2x4 and 40grit sandpaper.

It took hours. I finally got that task obat and glued build my own jon boat quarterly pieces. It is a scarf boar. Below are the two side panels glueing up. To be continued Join Date Oct Location dfw Posts 1, It reminds me a lot of my Build My Own Jon Boat 600 own 16' x 4 foot converted dinghy that I can't job to get back in the water in small wood boat models 50 spring. I almost made mine 12 feet, which would have made it a planing hull.

Re: Jon Boat Build Thanks for the encouraging replies. I will have to back up quartedly step though on my project. According to the Build my own jon boat quarterly Guard specs I will need a longer boat. At the 12 foot length and 44 inch beam I would not have enough weight safety factor for me, my wife and our gear. I am going to have to have a trailer. So I might as well build it I just hate having to do another one of those scarf joints in the ply.

RodB That is a beautiful boat that you have built. I like those side decks. It looks very sea worthy. Nice finish work quaterly. I cut the side panels down build my own jon boat quarterly cut two new side panels. I sanded those scarf joints. And a side view: The two long panels are glueing up right. Shhhhhhhhhhh be real quiet. They are compound cuts on two of the sides.

I can use the two bow pieces as build my own jon boat quarterly to draw the bow cut build my own jon boat quarterly the new panel sections.

Now the project is back on track. Rod I was thinking about building that kind of design but the Russian river where I live is VERY shallow and a flat bottom is what will work the best.

Re: Jon Boat Build This is a simple boat. So simple, yet I have made several measuring mistakes, and cutting mistakes. I am going to deviate from the plans just a little and make the bow a little narrower in the. Give it a little shape. I do not just want that rectangle shape boat.

I have spent several days just preparing the side panels. I hope I can get close to. This is what is happening so far. Two 15'3" side panels. I am looking forward to seeing it come. There are two kinds of boaters: those who have run aground, and those who lie about it. Scarfs are nice but for a jon boat who's going to care?

If you can put a thwart over them you won't see them. Re: Jon Boat Build Here's my 16x4 footer. Its very stable. I can sit on quuarterly rail with my feet dangling in the water and the water is nowhere near the rail. I just keep looking at the boat that ROB built. Originally Posted by JimD.
