Boat Building Fiberglass Resin Polyester vs Epoxy | Backyard Boatbuilders
Boat building basics. Prior to the development of fiberglass construction techniques, boats were built of wood, steel, and other materials, by assembling pieces and parts into a structure which was then sheathed with a hull. With fiberglass boat building, however, the major components of the boat the hull, deck, liner, and large parts like consolesare molded from fiberglass. Usually, this means starting with a female mold. This is the resin most commonly used for boatbuilding today, and most boat owners are familiar with it. It is inexpensive and generally all-purpose. It has low stretch (elongation) properties so it is not used on modern high-performance boats, but it is perfectly adequate for most boats. Fiberglass is used to build boats for many reasons. Chief among these are its durability, but also its easy to repair. You can patch boat holes in an afternoon and fiberglass a boat in just a couple of days. This article covers how to fiberglass a boat using epoxy resin. Steps. 1. Prepare the boat for fiber-glassing. Before you begin the process of applying fiberglass to your boat, you need to prepare the boat. There are several preparations to consider. Removing extra items from the bottom of the boat. You should remove the keel, any lift stakes or rails, and anything else that should not be. Think in terms of a boat. Many boats are made using fiberglass, which begins as a textilelike a long piece of fabric that comes on a roll. Fiberglass is laid into a mold that will create the boat's hull. A resin, in liquid form, is catalyzed and applied to the fiberglass in-mold. This means that when resin and fiber are combined, their performance remains most like the individual fiber properties. For example, it is not satisfactory to merely average the tensile strengths of fabric and resin to determine the strength of a panel. Test data shows that the fibrous reinforcement is the component carrying the majority of the load. For this reason, fabric selection is critical when designing composite structures.

Log in or Sign up. Boat Design Net. Hello all, I have 2 or 3 questions. This is my "1st time" fiber glassing and I'm doing some testing of my skills or lack of finishing some panels with glass and gel coat ect. I "wetted" the Nidacore and then laid 1. This 24X50 inch piece with 1 layer of 1.

Sound about right??? Tomorrow I will lay another layer of 1. Question, will I have to "grind or scuff" the 1st layer of hardened mat or can I wet out and apply another layer wetting through the new layer? The opposite side of the Nidacore I plan to wet out a layer of and then immediate "hot coat" a layer of 1. Is this "OK" to do or will the double layers result in "bubbles" weak spots or "whatever"?

Appreciated, Bill D. JPG File size: There nothing wrong with nida core! Best don't guess be accurate with the weight of the resin and the measuring of the catalyst and know what the gel time is you getting so you know how long you have to work with it!! All resin have there limitations of hardener mixes no mater what they are!!

My point is if you don't start off like you mean to carry on you will get no where!! Do the job properly and you will end up with more help than you can cope with. BUT if you continue on the slap dash she'll be right mate then that's all you will ever know and be missing out on so much!!!

I read the labels!! Tunnels, I read the labels and used a "measuring cup" for the catalyst. I appreciate your feedback. Thank you, Reelpleasure. Go here and click on the chart to make it readable. You did about 8 sq ft of 1.

Since one Fiberglass Resin For Boat Building Quality qt of resin weighs about 2. BUT, the chart isn't taking in to account absorption of resin by the substrate the nida core so you probably didn't do too bad for a first try. A little too much resin is better than too little. You ask simple questions but the answers aren't that simple. SamSam , May 26, You must log in or sign up to reply here. Show Ignored Content.
