Hello, Ideeas have a bunch of question regarding older aluminum boat hull. Restoartions I just got a project bpat to fix up and need some advice to steer me in the right direction. First the boat is an older 71 mirro craft 18ft aluminum center console. Boat has many leaks so they will restorahions my first order of business. I did put some water in the hull and found 15 leaks.

Apparently the last owners had alukinum the rivets out on 2 of the stringers on the outside of the boat and put in stainless machine screws in its place with some sort of epoxy around the, most of those leak! Question 1: I will have to remove all the screws but was wondering if SS machine screws are ok to reuse in this application?

I thought I read a problem with SS and aluminum causing corrosion over time if they touched one another? I think I might run into problems if it used on the machine screws. Question 3: What would be the recommended chemicals or methods on stripping all the old paint off the boat? Now, after that problem is fixed. I would like to repaint the boat with nice emron style paint. Question 4: Aluminum boat aluminum v bottom boat restorations and ideas 01 a special primer first an And after the primer will the emron paint adhere to it ok?

Think there will be chipping with flex of the aluminum? Also, there is another product called gluvit that seems like a good product to try I was just wondering if anyone used it or if it can be painted over with the emron paint? So lets say that all the leaks are fixed, boat primed and painted on the outside, this leads me to some more questions and in need of suggestions redtorations the inside.

I removed floor boards that someone made after cutting out the floor. The factory floor is fiberglass right on top a bun of foam.

The floor is spongy in areas and I need suggestions on how to repair. Not sure how to go about it considering there is no framing there, only foam? Did not know if I could gel coat new wood and place it over the fiberglass aluminum v bottom boat restorations and ideas 01 glue it down or something?

Question 5: Floor repair jdeas Well, that would give me a pretty good start on the project aluminum v bottom boat restorations and ideas 01 if you can help please feel free aluminum v bottom boat restorations and ideas 01 offer any input, will be checking back daily for your responses.

Start by ripping out the old floor so you can get at the leaky rivets. Drill or screw out the xluminum then drill out the hole so you can use the next size rivet. Remove any wet boaf and replace it. When I did this I used the 2 part stuff. It may be best to attach the floor to the stringers with aluminum rivets, but I used stainless aluminum v bottom boat restorations and ideas 01 and filled each hole with Once you have the new floor, you can cover it with vinyl or ldeas carpet.

Good luck, it's a bunch of work. Send a private message to O'Man. Find More Posts by O'Man. Received 1 Like on 1 Post. Re: Aluminum boat restoration questions. I hate to say that your best option is to strip this down to a bare hull aluminum v bottom boat restorations and ideas 01 start from.

Zip strip will take the paint off. Sand smooth. Prime and paint bortom to the recommendations at yachtpaint. On the inside you'll want to rip out everything and start from scratch. Use the floor pieces as templates for new floors. If the old floor was supported by foam, you'll want to build a new support structure of wood beams running athwartships.

This leaves a nice profile for the paint to adhere to. SS screws are no good as the ali will corrode even more and leak. Ideally you would tig weld these areas. Iwould replace the floor with ali but with the foam it could be a problem welding it in. Send a private message to danielw. Find More Posts by danielw. Not wise to sand blast alum. EMRON is a very hazardous product to use the fumes are deadly ant times A respirator will do a poor job of protecting you.

Contrary to what most people think Stainless steel screws do not cause corrosion in aluminum it is the minute gap around the screw subject to friction caused by flexing that promotes the corrosion If you resforations to use the same restoratins alum.

As the rivet is peened the diameter also increases. This can b prevented as O'man mentioned above buy installing the next size rivet. As yottoboy indicated stringers are advisable Under not circumstance should you use pressure treated lumber the copper reacts adversely with alum. Send a private message to daddy0. We used to just lay wooden floors in the aluminum and alkminum attach to the stringers. But this was a 16' duck hunting boat If you really want to remove the old paint, I'd use a wire brush. Realistically, I'd just paint over botto, old aluminum v bottom boat restorations and ideas 01. Just some ideas that came to me.

The re-purposed trailer we were provided to put the boat on was not setup for a rowboat, especially not one in the delicate condition of this boat. Since we mostly step from the dock onto the ends of the seats, having them hung from thin flanges would lead to new failures, so I decided to reinforce the ends from below. With thick high-quality aluminum and all-welded strength, every Crestliner hull is ready to withstand the harshest of waters and the worst weather conditions. LandCraft is proud to present our work, which has been provided as a donation to ensure that this group could commit to their cause and row this year.
