26 Saltwater Boats ideas | bay boats, saltwater boats, fishing boats Aug 16, I specially asked about salt water. I was informed that the jet boats are just like the jet skis and that they are excellent in salt water thus all the rentals. I should have no additional concerns keeping a jet boat in the water as compared to a conventional boat. It seems YJB group has boats in salt water everywhere. Jet boats can work in saltwater, but it comes with drawbacks. For one, they are not equipped with the right gear to handle saltwater, so you may experience slower speeds or more resistance in steering. In addition, without proper maintenance after a saltwater trip, they may see long-term damage. Yamaha jets in salt water - Jet Boaters Community Forum.

I agree with what most have said as its better to keep out of salt water. However, I debated this topic over and over before buying a lift, and most of these people commenting havent done it. I have two personal experiences with people leaving boat in salt water in NJ from may till sept. One is a personal friend with a Sx he's the reason I wanted a Yamaha. The other is a sea doo challenger.

The guy with the sea doo bottom paints his and also paints the grates and the pumps. The guy with the Yamaha lives on the water and every two weeks or more cause he gets lazy he takes it out flushes it and cleans it good and right back in same day. Not sure what the sea doo guy does cause he was a friend or a friend who informed me but he says he constantly checks his zincs and both have stated never a problem.

So look it can be done its gonna hurt your resale if bottom paint but almost every other boat has bottom paint. His sx runs great and looks fine too gotta give it a Are Yamaha Boats Good In Saltwater 10 good cleaning but otherwise mechanically sound. A member here also leave his in salt water in the Mediterranean sea.

Maybe he will chime in and give his thoughts. I chose to get a lift cause 7k was worth it to me not have to bottom paint all the time and frankly its better for any boat not just a jet.

While anyone must say its better not to obviously but I have seen a boat on its 12th season that sits in salt water and hes fine so it can be done. Posted: Wed Jul 18, am. I would not recommend it.. I got it for what I thought was a deal being mechanically inclined.. I'm sure if you took the precautions and removed it at times, cleaned it and flushed the engines it could be fine.

It all depends how you feel about your boat, what you paid for it and the condition at that time. Could not take a new boat myself and just plop it in saltwater knowing what I have been through. It just is not worth the worry.. At the end of the day.. Thanks for all of the advice, much appreciated To go along with my feedback.. I have only owned jetdrives and as a former mechanic it is the reason of my decision.. I just can't imagine owning a stern drive.. Jet boats are at a slight disadvantage from galvanic corrosion than other more traditional boats due to there running gear being always below the waterline.

This is a big problem in salt water because the salt acts like an electrolyte. The drives on the boats are unpainted aluminum which is pretty low in the anodic index. Matter in fact it only slightly better than zinc. Zinc is an anode and therefore when a metal is present that is higher on the anodic index more cathodic a elecric connection is made and the zinc basiclly erodes as its electrons migrate to the cathode. Since alumiun is only slightly better this is why you will see more pitting on aluminum drives compared to other drived of different metal like bronze.

And since these boats arent exactly built from the factory with tons on zinc plates all around the running gear I would not personnaly keep it in the water. Plus if you are in an area that is prone to zebra mussels then it is going to be rough removing them from the intakes. I love the jet drives, but when I do purchase mine I will be trailer storing it. Also I would like to add that more ruggedized units like the KaMeWa use stainless steel drives. I often launch my boat on Friday and retrieve it on Sunday.

During this time at a salt water dock, I flush it after every trip using the tow valves. The only concern is the exposed drive componets. They still look relatively new with no pitting as I clean and coat them when on the trailer. I also keep the throttles in full reverse to keep foreign objects and fish out.

If you use it in salt water and religiously take the boat out of the water when done, give it a thorough cleaning, and completely flush the engines for minutes with either fresh water or fresh water with an additive Salt Away, Salt Terminator or the like you will not have a problem.

The key to using this boat in salt water is religiously cleaning the boat and a flushing the engines. I had an LS for many years which was used in salt water on occasion. When it sold at the ripe age of 12 years old, it was in near pristine condition, despite salt water usage.

Many have opined that you do not need the salt fighter additive, but there is a chemical component to these additives that lays down and builds up a protective coating over time, so why not?

It can't hurt. Again, as with anything - religious maintenance is the key to keeping all things in a new condition. Thanks for all the fast feedback. I lived in Savannah for nine years and took another boat to and from the water and of course washed and flushed.

I know so many people that keep their boats by their docks all season at least nine months. I know the hull gets dirty, it does this in fresh water too all kinds of barnacles on the housing that I have to clean twice a year along with the hull. I think the impellers are the danger areas. I will probably have to either get a dry lift or consider dry storage when I make this move.

I plan to start taking the LS down for extended vacations to see how she really does with the intercostal waters and ocean in that area. The water can be rough and large. Posted: Wed Aug 14, am. If you put it on the trailer and give it a good washing and cleaning inside and out every 3 days you should be ok, however add a zinc anode to the pumps, the factory has aluminum anodes on them , zinc is better for salt water.

To flush the engines I add dish soap Are Yamaha Boats Good In Saltwater Island to the flush hose, all I run in is salt water, also spray a lot of silicon or spray furniture polish on the engine etc to keep the water from damaging it. Posted: Wed Aug 14, pm. Jeff, Thanks this is very good info. Would the zinc anodes work better in fresh water as well? When you spray the silicon over the engine, I assume you spray the whole area and not worry about whatever will burn off.

Odd, our boat came from the factory with saltwater anodes magnesium as I recall. NOW with Continental aluminum trailer. Keep in mind the shape isn't really a big deal, you can add any shape anode even to just one section of the pump that is convenient.

Spraying silicone or wax etc just coats the parts and eventually needs to be re-applied occasionally. If you want to coat the inside of the engine cooling system try using a car wash soap that has the added wax mixed in, this can also protect the aluminum inside the water jackets etc by leaving behind a slight protective film. You can use a car wash brush and clean the hull leaving that film on it and to make it easier for removing the stains etc. I noticed when I left my boats and skies in the water for 2 weeks at a time here in florida that in a few days barnacles started to grow in the recesses first, so washing them every few days solved the majority of the issues.
