You don't need the straight-edge, but it is infinitely easier to make a cut if you do, and the risk of slipping and cutting into a template is raedy reduced.

If you have a scroll saw or band saw it erady be put to good use at this step. As the pieces are separated from each other, there will be excess material surrounding the templates. Now it's time to trim that.

I tend to do it in successive steps and using the straight-edge as much as possible. The resulting angles will be taken off at the final trim.
