I do not know all or maybe even most of the GL70 owners but I do know that Bill Martin sailed a Cal25 back in the 60s, I have met Tom Neil and pretentious is not a word that comes to mind, I doubt if John Nedeau has sailed what is it now, close to 60 Chi-Macs all on a big boat, and Dick Jennings did not start with a 70'.

No doubt that there's an ahole or two in the group, but the GL70 class seems to have many owners that have enjoyed a long-term love of sailing AND been successful enough in their professional lives to evolve into the big boats.

The boats that are now the GL70s were first designed for the downwinder to Honolulu, and were so cool that a whole scene evolved around them, even though they were not very good around the buoys, they were spectatular and offered closer racing than the IOR maxis ever did, at least on the West Coast.

But times change, and with the advent of the arms race and turbo'd boats, the class scene fell apart. Take the lack of runners, for example; lots of sled rigs went over the side during the hey-days of the class, and now take a look at the rig on a TP52; bomb-proof.

Note that there aren't many TP52s on the left coast and only 2 are sailing to Hawaii this summer. The 70s left and now maxi sleds randomly appear and disappear with various lengths and appendages while chasing the barn door. Transpac is all about family and friends surfing with over sized kites and planing hulls. The 70's fleet became an arms race. Others went Farr Some left the sport completely.
