The cables are 12 awg wire which to the best of my knowledge is rated at 20 amps. I may be wrong, but I think if 40 amps are needed, 10 or 8 awg wire should be used.
The 12 awg wire is fine for my use. It is an extension for a battery charger Bass Pro XPS 3 bank that is engineered by ProMariner lead which is also 12 awg wire and fused with 20 amp fuses.
I just changed the 40 amp fuse on the extension cable to a 20 amp blade fuse and all is working fine. I just feel that this product should not be shipped to a customer with a 40 amp fuse. One person found this helpful. For the most part this is a great product. Wires were just long enough to reach the front battery and run to the back of my 17ft blazer jet boat to the charger. I messed up and overtighten the plastic blocks junk that connected the 2 leads so I just spliced into the wires and connected them with waterproof heat shrink butt connectors I had already. Picture did not look like what I was sent. There were no yellow square caps on one end and the fuses were in two red square case not in line like the product photo.
The fuses blew out on initial hook up. Replaced fuses next day and they worked. One clamp screw head broke when tightening. Nice 12 cable to extend my charger leads. The plastic package had obviously been opened previously, then stapled shut and sent to me.
