Otherwise I was just going to roll on the resin. When is Fiberglass matting used and what are the benefits? I don't see the reason to use vuilding matting unless you are reinforcing a joint, crack, imperfection. You will never be able to seal the fiberglass resin for boat building github with just resin.

Mat really has no structural strength, but it does absorb a lot of resin, so its used as a first layer in a layup of several layers. Mat then structural glass like Guessing at what you are doing, I would miter the edges of fibdrglass ply 45 deg, round off the corners some, apply resin, then a lyer of mat, wet out, then a layer of 6 oz cloth to give it a clean look.

The miter and rounding are so the mat and cloth will lay smooth. TripleCrownNCApr 21, That was wrong Triple, sorry! Endgrain has to be covered several times to encapsulate the wooden fibres. If the surfaces is painted not varnishedyou may apply one githb of plain resin and another one of Fiberglass resin for boat building github putty to close the endgrain, then another layer resin to close the sanded putty fiberglass resin for boat building github. On the ply surface you need two to three layers of epoxy resin to make it waterprotected.

Then paint it to protect the resin foe UV rays! Buolding adds weight and cost, nothing. Regards Richard. Thanks for the clarification. So two or three layers of epoxy resin fiberglass resin for boat building github be enough to seal the plywood?

I will be carpeting over the decks, so no need for paint. Can you think of any circumstances where I would need to use mat? All to seal plywood, but sometimes it can make sense to use, for example, cleated cedar boards, which need nothing more than a coating of oil for protection, and which cost far less than good plywood and epoxy and glass. This applies if bost area beneath the deck needn't be sealed or covered from spray or rain.

Fasteners would be stainless screws. With a gallon at over a hundred dollars and a quart often fithub enough to do the job, buying another quart because you ran short plus hardener becomes even more costly. A cedar deck would need no non-skid either, nor primer and paint. There is buipding the question of the use of pressure treated plywood as a substrate suitable for applying epoxy.

Supposedly, pressure treated wood is already ready for the marine environment and a lot of boat builders use it for applying carpeting, without any treatment whatsoever. I sure wouldn't use PT plywood if I was planning on encapsulating it in resin.

I'd use it because it was going to be left unprotected! Also, it is never wise to coat only a portion of a fibergkass with epoxy. My recommendation would be to assess whether you need the deck to become a permanent part of the giithub to begin. A removable deck allows repairs and inspection later. That's a good reaqson to use either solid wood slats with spaces between with cleats or perhaps pressure-treated plywood with carpet stapled onto it.

Or, solid wood ggithub there's no need to keep water out Always go for extra ventilation if you can aboard a boat to prevent mold and the rot that inevitably follows. Apex, there was nothing wrong with what I said. Seems to me that glassing over wood has been going on a year or two.

If you like, go ahead and not glass it, buildibg it with carpet. You learn by doing. Much depends on the desired end result. So many factors are involved that no one way is best in all situations. I go with Apex if the boat is going to be sealed up below the deck.

Simply sealing with epoxy all sides will ensure no rot is going to take hold for a long fiberglass resin for boat building github. However, Triple may be anticipating voids in the flberglass which would, if not rot easily, degrade the surface down the line by collapsing in the surface veneer, creating, in essence, a hole.

All buildung considered, better plywood would do well just epoxy-sealed and painted. Cloth would be githhub unless very heavy use traffic was anticipated. One has to weigh these factors. Or again, see if fiberglass resin for boat building github boards or fir or cypress. They need neither epoxy or cloth to last for fiberglasss years. Just oiling and ventilation. Thank resij to all for desin advice.

Because epoxies form superior secondary bonds, they do not have a problem adhering to properly prepared, cured polyester. Comparing epoxy and polyester Polyester resin and epoxy resins differ in a number of ways.

Polyester resin often referred to as boat resin is still used today to build most production fiberglass boats because it is the lowest cost option for new construction when combined with fiberglass reinforcements. Polyester resin can be quite brittle so randomly oriented chopped strand fiberglass is typically used between layers of woven or stitched fabrics so loads can be effectively transferred between the structural fiberglass plies.

Without the chopped strand, micro cracks can develop over time in the resin between structural fiberglass layers. Polyester resin is normally air-inhibited, which means it typically remains uncured sticky or tacky on the surface when exposed to air. To cure reliably, general-purpose polyester resin needs to be applied in at least 15 to 25 mil.

Polyester resin is not recommended for repairing vinylester or epoxy laminates. Epoxy is used very effectively as an adhesive, as a laminating resin for wetting out structural fabrics, and as a coating. It has excellent thin film cure characteristics and resists micro- cracking better than polyester resin.

It offers excellent moisture barrier qualities when used as a coating. It adheres to many different substrates including wood, metals, cured polyester laminates, vinylester laminates and epoxy laminates. It binds extremely well to graphite fibers, which is why it is often used for making high-strength graphite fiber composites. Repair yards often have to work in much cooler conditions. Extra MEKP methyl ethyl keytone peroxide catalyst can be added to assist the cure in cool temperatures, but cured physical properties suffer because of it.

Shelf life of general-purpose polyester resin is six months to a year from the time it is manufactured. Epoxy has fewer fumes Fumes from polyester resin are quite strong and flammable. For larger amounts the supplier ships the epoxy in gallon jugs. So, if you order one gallon you will get two one-gallon jugs.

One is resin and one is hardener. I tell you this because neither will be completely full but the combination of the two makes 1 gallon of epoxy. All epoxy mixes are different. Some require equal amounts of resin and hardener and some require a lesser amount of hardware to the resin that supplied.

But that is not the case. When you mix epoxy, you must mix exactly as the instructions say. I had a real mess up my hands. That was when I founder that white vinegar helps to remove some uncured a epoxy. But the real goal is not to put yourself in a place where you need to remove it. So be sure to mix you epoxy exactly has the instructions state.

Lastly, I will tell you we found that Polyester Resin does not stick to epoxy very well. However, Epoxy loves Polyester resin. So, our repairs are best done using epoxy resin. Tuesday, April 6, Backyard Boatbuilders. Boat Project Supplies. On-Board Battery Charger. Boat Plans. Project Boats for Sale. The concept behind the fiberglass material is quite simple. The resin acts as a binding medium that makes the fine glass fibers stiffen and become stronger.

The glass filaments are very thin, even thinner than one strand of hair, and when resin is applied, the glass fibers turns into an incredibly durable and strong fiberglass material for boats.

A fiberglass boat is a trend that is rapidly growing in the boatbuilding community. Let us look at the steps on how to apply fiberglass on your boat to make it more durable, long-lasting, and attractive. Before you start applying fiberglass into your constructed boat, you must prepare your boat for the installation.

The mixing of the resin and hardener must be done precisely as the packageinstruction says. And as soon as the solution is ready, pour it immediately into the paint tray. And then wait for around 30 minutes for the mixture to harden, and get ready to apply the toughened solution to the hull of your boat. The seal coat is the term used for the first covering of resin.

It is applied through a foam roller, where you need to use firm force and directional strokes in order to evenly distribute the resin. Prepare the fiberglass cloth and cut it according to the shapes needed to cover your boat. Use staples, tacks, or tape to attach them to the boat. The second coating of resin is called the bond coat.

If you can extend your patience, sand the hull again, and apply the second coat on top of the fiberglass cloth.
