Glen Canyon & Lake Powell [Maps & Information] | Visit Utah

Lake Powell has almost mals, miles of shoreline and some of 09 most ravishingly spectacular scenery in the southwest. Yet it remains largely lake powell boating maps 90 to most photographers due to the need to rent or own and operate a boat, and the very limited access by land.

Since my own knowledge of boating consists of sitting pwell deck drinking beer I booked a Lake Powell photo tour in Octoberand had such great time I went on another tour in November of Both tours were led by Gary Ladda renowned Arizona 990 photographer. Gary has lived in Page for nearly 35 Boating Maps Sunshine Coast Pdf years and is the author of the Arizona Highways book on Lake Powelland many. Remarkably Gary has rowed the entire length of Lake Powell in a wooden boat!

The October tour lasted one week and consisted of myself, my wife Elaine, four other photographers, Gary, and our captain Danny Woods. Danny is lake powell boating maps 90 of those mape people of seemingly limitless energy who can handle anything thrown at.

In addition laje his captaining skills Danny is a great cook and loves to fish. He can be reached at fishingpowell. If you are planning on a photo tour of the lake and need a captain or trip leader I highly recommend you contact Gary lxke Danny or.

The November tour ran for ten days and consisted of myself, my wife Lake powell boating maps 90, and nine other boatihg There were two houseboats on this trip, both more comfortable and spacious than those we used in The two somewhat larger boats occasionally limited the areas we could visit, for example Anasazi Canyon was not accessible.

In April of we returned to Lake Powell to photograph Reflection Canyon from the rim using a new to most mapps. The trip ran for five days and consisted of myself, my wife Elaine, and five other participants. We traveled by pontoon boat and camped on shore. The boat was lake powell boating maps 90 faster than the houseboats used in the past allowing us to visit more sites in less time.

The boat was also smaller than a houseboat so we could revisit Anasazi Canyon even at low water levels. Water level was 3, which stopped us from visiting Cathedral of the Desert and La Gorce arch.

In April of we returned again just to photograph Reflection Canyon at a very low water level. We camped for two days which gave us the lake powell boating maps 90 to shoot in a variety of conditions. We got good images of the Milky Way rising over the canyon and the obligatory "speedboat with wake" baoting.

We ran into several other people hoating the rim who had hiked in from Hole in the Rock road. Temperatures were above average during the period. There is no shade anywhere along the rim of Reflection Canyon so we were miserable afternoons but the photography made it worth it.

Since botaing lake elevation was 3, the spine was clearly visible. If your sole purpose is photography the best months of the year in which to visit the lake are September and especially October.

By mid-October the summer crowds are gone, air temperatures during the day are mild, winds are light, and lake powell boating maps 90 is still warm enough for swimming. November is also a good month but the water is colder, days are short, and the end of the month is cold. We saw far fewer boats on our November trip than we did in October. Unlike most locations where the photographer is constantly subject to "Can we go now", Lake Powell is family friendly.

There aren't many places as scenic as the lake where those with interests other than photography hiking, swimming, kayaking, diving, water or jet skiing, fishing, relaxing on deck, So if you're traveling with non-photographers or children consider the summer. For posell photographer the summer offers a chance for dramatic light and the Milky Way is peak.

The downside is it will be hot when hiking, photos will likely include boaitng boats, some of the best landing places will be taken, rental rates are high, and lake powell boating maps 90 of boats is limited.

But your spouse and kids will be happy and that's worth a lot! March to May are good months for hiking but keep in mind that Spring is the windy season in the southwest. Wind makes boat handling and landing difficult, and the lake surface is lake powell boating maps 90 so shooting reflections is not possible.

The powelp is lowest in mid-April, so if you wish posell shoot low water sites such as Reflection Canyon go. Unless you are boatung hardy winter on the lake is not advisable, most people will japs miserable. Lake Powell has 96 major canyons and you can anchor your boat and explore most of them on foot. For some locations landing is not possible due to the presence of high walls, narrow accessor driftwood impeding travel. Some of the 96 canyons can be reached by overland routes possibly lake powell boating maps 90 multi day backpacks or Fwc Boating Maps Mac blating skills.

Overland access to locations on the south side involves crossing Navajo Nation land and a permit is required. A good map for photographers showing the 96 canyons and many of the photographic features is the Boatimg Jones map available on Amazon.

If you purchase this map I suggest you get it laminated. For navigation I suggest you purchase an iPhone or android app, and a marine chart of the lake. Over the two trips poewll visited nineteen locations. We traveled up lake as far as the alcoves in Willow Creek. I've included GPS coordinates for most of these locations. The coordinates are less accurate than those I usually provide as the high canyon walls often precluded a strong signal.

The water level during both trips was feet which is 99 feet below full pool 3, feet. Water level has a significant impact on photography and boating at Lake Powell, for example here are two images of Lake powell boating maps 90 Bridge, powel taken during my last trip 3, feetone in August, 3, feet :. The following table shows the locations visited during our trip.

TPE shows sunrise sunset times and shadow information and can be used for shot planning. On my last trip with Gary Ladd he suggested that the rim could be accessed from the lake starting at a small inlet at In April of we decided to kaps for the Reflection Canyon rim starting at this inlet.

We put in and ascended the slickrock, reaching the rim viewpoints after an off-trail one way hike of about one mile. The route we took is shown on the Google map lake powell boating maps 90. We shot the canyon in mid-afternoon on a day with soft light and some wind from two viewpoints.

The viewpoints are shown on the Google map. In my opinion the second viewpoint is better than the first, obating going further north along the rim would be even better. At 3, the spine can be seen just under water. In addition to my map above, Googlemaps has another user defined map of Lake Powell with points of. It can ppwell found. Lkae divided the map into three sections: Main - covering the main channel from Page to the lower San Juan 27 mapsBullfrog 12 mapsand Hite 6 maps.

For reference here are images showing the names of all 45 topo maps and their locations. Poowell and merged topo maps can be downloaded from the tables following these images. Contact Us. When to Go If your Boating Lake Maps 3d sole purpose is photography the best months of the year in which naps visit the lake are September and especially October. Water Level 3, Feet. Weathering Pit Ridge. Cookie Jar Butte. Reflection canyon. Last Chance Bay. The Big Pool. Anasazi Canyon. Balanced Rock Canyon. Cascade Canyon Area. Clear Creek Canyon. Dominguez Butte. Face Canyon. Fiftymile Creek Alcove. Mountain Sheep Canyon. Mouth of the San Juan River. Pool Canyon. The Escalante River.

Vivid Rock. Willow Creek. Dinosaur Tracks. One day boat tours are available leaving from Wahweap Marina. Rainbow bridge opens to the SSE so it is best shot from the south side in late morning.

You must pass under the bridge to get to the south. Most visitors keep to the north side of the arch since there is a sign stating that the area under the arch is sacred to the Navajo people. The sign is routinely ignored by locals. Shooting from the south side offers two advantages: the arch is in good light, and there will be few if any people in map picture. The north side of the arch never gets light.

The best time to visit Lake Powell is the early summer or early fall. The water and air temperature slowly begin warming up around May, and the crowds begin coming in June.

The summer days are long and hot and perfect for passing the time on the water. However, the temperature gets uncomfortably hot in late summer, even at night. The monsoon season is active from mid-June through late September and the storms can be quite dangerous if you are caught in one on the water.

By October the weather is beautiful and the crowds have thinned out. The best months to visit are mid-May to mid-June, or late September to mid-October. I think what held us back from going to Lake Powell for so long was that we always associated Powell with houseboats. If you are interested in a houseboat there are plenty of rental options.

I would recommend starting your search here. If you consider yourselves more of a hotel family than a camping family, the Lake Powell Resort may be just for you. It is conveniently located at the Wahweap Marina and delivers stunning views. The resort also has access to swimming pools and fire pits overlooking the water. If you do book a room, be sure to make dinner reservations in the Rainbow Room for beautiful sunset views from the large picture windows.

If you are a vegetarian you can ask for the kids price since all the main dishes are meat. You can also get a hotel in Page, which is about 15 minutes from the Wahweap Marina. We have stayed at the Hampton Inn and had a great experience. The rooms are clean and modern and it is centrally located in town near shopping and restaurants.

The path down to the marina is quite steep, but there are complimentary golf cart rides available tips are appreciated. Tent camping on the beach is also an option.

You are free to camp on the shoreline as long as you have a portable toilet. However, Lake Powell is known for its harsh winds and sandstorms that can make tent camping quite miserable.

If you want to tent camp away from the winds, I would recommend reserving a spot at one of the four developed campgrounds like the Wahweap Marina RV Park and Campground. Bullfrog, Halls Crossing, and Hite Marina campgrounds also provide sites with electrical hookups, showers, restrooms, picnic tables, and grills.

We have also opted to rent an RV and it was a great option for us. There are no designated campsites and no reservations at Lone Rock Beach. I would recommend arriving as early as you can and preferably on a weekday to ensure that you get a spot. Flush toilets and rinse showers are located at the campground information center. Outhouse toilets are also located on the beach. If you do decide to tent camp, be sure to bring a portable toilet if you are camping more than a few hundred feet away from the outhouses.

Rangers regularly patrol the area and enforce this rule. We love that you can drive right up on the sand and have the lake right out your front door. However, 4-wheel drive is recommended since it is easy to get stuck in the sand. We had no problem driving the RV on the sand, but there were a few cars without 4WD that needed help getting out.

If you have kids, be sure to bring sand toys. Bring some inexpensive tiki torches and enjoy the beautiful evenings on the beach. Our favorite treat is to cook homemade dutch oven peach cobbler over the campfire. I totally underestimated the size of Lake Powell, it is massive! The lake stretches nearly miles through Arizona and Utah. Fun fact: if the 1, miles of shoreline were stretched out, it would be longer than the entire west coast of the US!

The nice thing about Lake Powell being so big is that it never feels crowded. With more than 80 side canyons, it also means that there are endless places to explore. The most scenic canyons can be found between the Dangling Navionics Boating Maps 3d Model Rope Marina and the Escalante drainage. Lake Powell is obviously best explored by boat.

You can also take a boat tour to several different destinations on the lake. Or for a fun and memorable experience, rent paddle boards from Lake Powell Paddle Boards. Rent them overnight so that you can explore Antelope creek and camp on Antelope Island. Here are some of our favorite spots to explore at Lake Powell, and for more locations check out our guide 9 Secret Spots at Lake Powell to Explore! This spot is amazing!

Getting there is half the adventure! Click on the link at the end of the post for a map to the Labyrinth slot canyon, but here are some visual directions. We were following behind our friends and their wake sloshed us around like we were in a washing machine. The kids thought it was so fun, but I was a little nervous!

Just go slow and give yourself space behind other boats. Rookie mistake. We then climbed out and walked the rest of the way to the slot canyon entrance. The water is only about waist deep at this point and can be pretty dirty and smelly. The kids had the best time exploring every nook and cranny.

They still talk about their adventure to this day! Antelope Point Holdings, one of the park's concessionaires, provides boat rental, valet launching, slip rental, boat repair, boat pump-out, a restaurant, snack bar, and a small convenience store.

Contact: Call or visit the Antelope Point website for more information. Dangling Rope Marina is accessible only by water. There is no boat launching facility at Dangling Rope.

The National Park Service provides a ranger station, restrooms, free boat pump-out station, and emergency communications. During the summer season, interpretive rangers are stationed at nearby Rainbow Bridge National Monument.

Services at Dangling Rope include boat fuel, minor boat repair, and a supply store that also has groceries. It also provides a launch ramp and free boat pump-out station. Visitor services include housekeeping units, grocery store, two campgrounds one with hook-ups , laundry, showers, service station, and boat repair.

There are no marina services available at Hite, but there are primitive boat launches and other visitor services. Boat launching is at your own risk and 4WD is recommended. The Hite Ranger Station has emergency services, visitor information, public restrooms, and a fish cleaning station. A convenience store is open daily except during the winter season with gasoline and diesel fuel available year round. RV and portable toilet dump stations are also available, as well as potable water.

Wahweap Bay is the most active center for boat excursions on Lake Powell, including the popular trip to Rainbow Bridge National Monument. The stone arc of Rainbow Bridge is composed of Navajo sandstone on a base of Kayenta sandstone. Rainbow Bridge spans feet, reaching a height of feet above Bridge Creek and ranging from 33 to 42 feet thick. Whether you take your own boat or sign up for a boat tour, a memorable excursion to Rainbow Bridge National Monument is at least a half-day adventure, and it includes a mile-long hike to get a good view of the natural bridge.

A shorter boat trip with awesome scenery is to Gunsight Bay. Expect this excursion to take a couple hours at least, and make sure you have your camera ready to capture the amazing views of Gunsight Butte.

Antelope Canyon is another popular boating destination in the southern reaches of Lake Powell, accessible from Wahweap. At ten miles long, this narrow canyon showcases some of the most amazing Navajo Sandstone architecture ever produced by Mother Nature.

Nearby Navajo Canyon, with its foot high walls, is another amazing spot to check out. Click here for more information on boating destinations in northern Lake Powell. Contact them at or at www. Contact them at Read more about the scenic boat tour experience of Lake Powell.

No boat of your own? No problem! Antelope Point Marina rents houseboats, cruisers, water toys, and kayaks. For complete contact information see the Marinas section above.

There is no more intimate way to experience a body of water than from the cockpit of a sea kayak or on a stand up paddleboard. Kayaking is a popular activity on Lake Powell. Whether you want to do a two-hour tour near a marina or head out on a multiday kayak-camping trip, the options are incredible. Visit the kayaking page of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area website for more information on kayaking including safety information that is of utmost importance!

In addition to regular entrance fees to Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, separate permits are required for boating in Lake Powell. There is no fee for launching a kayak. A detailed map of Lake Powell and its canyons is crucial to any boating adventure. Maps can be ordered online or purchased in local marinas.
