If you lose power steering assist because the electric power steering system is not functioning, you can steer, but it will take more effort. Page Steering In Emergencies The same thing can happen if you are steering through a sharp curve and you suddenly accelerate.
Those two control systems � steering and acceleration � can overwhelm those places where the tires meet the road and make you lose control. Page Off-Road Recovery An emergency like this requires close attention and a quick decision. But you have to act fast, steer quickly, and just as quickly straighten the wheel once you have avoided the object. Page Passing Passing The driver of a vehicle about to pass another on a two-lane highway waits for just the right moment, accelerates, moves around the vehicle ahead, then goes back into the right lane again.
A simple maneuver? Not necessarily! Passing another vehicle on a two-lane highway is a potentially dangerous move, since the passing vehicle occupies the same lane as oncoming traffic for several seconds. When you are far enough ahead of the passed vehicle to see its front in your inside mirror, activate your right lane change signal and move back into the right lane.

But it can if your tires do not have much tread or if the pressure in one or more is low. It can happen if a lot of water is standing on the road. Page City Driving City Driving One of the biggest problems with city streets is the amount of traffic on them. You will want to watch out for what the other drivers are doing and pay attention to traffic signals. Page Freeway Driving Freeway Driving Mile for mile, freeways � also called thruways, parkways, expressways, turnpikes, or superhighways � are the safest of all roads.
But they have their own special rules. The most important advice on freeway driving is: Keep up with traffic and keep to the right. Drive at the same speed most of the other drivers are driving. Expect to move slightly slower at night. When you want to leave the freeway, move to the proper lane well in advance. If you miss your exit, do not, under any circumstances, stop and back up.

You will have a lot less traction, or grip, and will need to be very careful. Push the brake pedal down steadily to get the most traction you can. Remember, unless you have ABS, if you brake so hard that your wheels stop rolling, you will just slide. Page You can run the engine to keep warm, but be careful.
This can cause deadly CO carbon monoxide gas to get inside. CO could overcome you and kill you. You cannot see it or smell it, so you might not know it is in your vehicle.
This saves fuel. When you run the engine, make it go a little faster than just idle. That is, push the accelerator slightly. This uses less fuel for the heat that you get and it keeps the battery charged. That will clear the area around your front wheels. Page 4. The GVWR includes the weight of the vehicle, all occupants, fuel, and cargo.
In a trunk, put them as far forward as you can. Some vehicles have restrictions on how far and how long they can tow. Also, repairs would not be covered by the warranty.
Never have your vehicle towed from the rear. Dolly Towing Your vehicle cannot be dolly towed, but can be dinghy towed. Notice: Dolly towing your vehicle may cause damage because of reduced ground clearance. For example, if the trailer is too heavy, the brakes may not work well � or even at all.

Check with your dealer before adding equipment to the outside of your vehicle. Page Fuels In Foreign Countries Gasolines containing oxygenates, such as ethers and ethanol, and reformulated gasolines may be available in your area to contribute to clean air. Notice: Your vehicle was not designed for fuel that contains methanol. To help avoid injuries to you and others, read and follow all the instructions on the pump island. Turn off your engine when you are refueling. Do not smoke if you are near fuel or refueling your vehicle.
Fuel can spray out on you if you open the fuel cap too quickly. This spray can happen if your tank is nearly full, and is more likely in hot weather. Open the fuel cap slowly and wait for any hiss noise to stop. Static electricity discharge from the container can ignite the gasoline vapor. You can be badly burned and your vehicle damaged if this occurs. Pull the interior hood release lever with this symbol on it.

Engine Oil Dipstick. But you must use the right kind. This section explains what kind of oil to use. Failure to use the recommended oil can result in engine damage not covered by your warranty. These numbers on an oil container show its viscosity, or thickness. Page What To Do With Used Oil When the system has calculated that oil life has been diminished, it will indicate that an oil change is necessary.
Change your oil as soon as possible within the next miles 1 km. Never dispose of oil by putting it in the trash, pouring it on the ground, into sewers, or into streams or bodies of water. Page Automatic Transaxle Fluid 2. Because this procedure is difficult, you should have it done at your dealer service department.
Contact your dealer for additional information, or the procedure can be found in the service manual. If a leak occurs, take the vehicle to the dealership service department and have it repaired as soon as possible.
If you use this coolant mixture, you do not need to add anything else. Page CAUTION: Turning the surge tank pressure cap when the engine and radiator are hot can allow steam and scalding liquids to blow out and burn you badly. Never turn the surge tank pressure cap � even a little � when the engine and radiator are hot.

Coolant contains ethylene glycol, and it will burn if the engine parts are hot enough. Do not spill coolant on a hot engine. Be sure the cap is properly and tightly secured. If you get an engine coolant temperature warning, but see or hear no steam, the problem may not be too serious. Page Cooling System Cooling System When you decide it is safe to lift the hood, here is what you will see: 2.

Page If the coolant inside the coolant surge tank is boiling, do not do anything else until it cools down. The vehicle should be parked on a level surface. Failure to follow this procedure could cause your engine to overheat and be severely damaged. If you have not found a problem yet, check to see if coolant is visible in the coolant surge tank. Page Notice: In cold weather, water can freeze and crack the engine, radiator, heater core and other parts. Use the recommended coolant and the proper coolant mixture. Coolant contains ethylene glycol and it will burn if the engine parts are hot enough.
Page Windshield Washer Fluid 3. If the level is below the line, add additional coolant to bring the level up to the line. See Engine Compartment Overview on page for reservoir location.
Page Brake Wear Brake Wear Your vehicle has front disc brakes and may have rear drum brakes or rear disc brakes. Disc brake pads have built-in wear indicators that make a high-pitched warning sound when the brake pads are worn and new pads are needed. Page Battery Brake Adjustment Every time you make a moderate brake stop, your disc brakes adjust for wear. If you rarely make a moderate or heavier stop, then your brakes might not adjust correctly.
If you drive in that way, then � very carefully � Page Jump Starting Vehicle Storage If you are not going to drive your vehicle for 25 days or more, remove the black, negative cable from the battery. This will help keep your battery from running down. Page 2. Get the vehicles close enough so the jumper cables can reach, but be sure the vehicles are not touching each other. If they are, it could cause a ground connection you do not want.
You would not be able to start your vehicle, and the bad grounding could damage the electrical systems. Page The remote negative terminal, marked GND , is located behind the engine coolant surge tank. Keep your hands away from moving parts once the engine is running. Check that the jumper cables do not have loose or missing insulation. If they do, you could get a shock. Page Headlamp Aiming Notice: If the jumper cables are connected or removed in the wrong order, electrical shorting may occur and damage the vehicle.
The repairs would not be covered by your warranty. Always connect and remove the jumper cables in the correct order, making sure that the cables do not touch each other or other metal.
Page It is recommended that the vehicle is taken to your dealer for service if the headlamps need to be re-aimed. It is possible however, to re-aim the headlamps as described in the following procedure.
Page To adjust the vertical aim on the headlamps, do the following: 1. Find the aim dot on the lens of the low-beam lamp. Measure the distance from the ground to the aim dot on the lamp. Record the distance. Page Bulb Replacement 5. Turn the vertical aiming screw until the headlamp beam is aimed to the horizontal tape line. The top edge of the cut-off should be positioned at the bottom edge of the horizontal tape line.
Repeat Steps 4 and 5 for the opposite headlamp. Bulb Replacement For the proper type of replacement bulbs, see Replacement Bulbs on page Sidemarker C. Headlamp To replace one of these bulbs, do the following: 1. Open the hood. See Hood Release on page for more information. Pull the headlamp assembly up on an angle and towards the radiator to remove. Disconnect the bulb base from the wiring harness by lifting the plastic locking tab.
Pull the bulb assembly down to access the bulbs. Remove the bulb by pulling it straight out. Install a new bulb. Align the tabs in the bulb assembly with the assembly in the trunk lid. Push the bulb assembly back into place until it snaps in. Remove the taillamp from the quarter panel. Remove the taillamp bulb socket from the assembly by turning it counterclockwise. Pull the old bulb out of the socket.
Reverse Steps 1 through 6 to reinstall the taillamp assembly. Open the trunk. See Trunk on page for more information. Locate the back-up lamp bulb assembly in the trunk lid. Remove the bulb socket by turning it counterclockwise. Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement Windshield wiper blades should be inspected at least twice a year for wear or cracking. Page Wheel Alignment And Tire Balance Wheel Alignment and Tire Balance The tires and wheels on your vehicle were aligned and balanced carefully at the factory to give you the longest tire life and best overall performance.
Adjustments to wheel alignment and tire balancing will not be necessary on a regular basis. However, if you notice unusual tire wear or your vehicle pulling to one side or the other, the alignment may need to be checked.
It could fail suddenly and cause a crash. If you have to replace a wheel, use a new GM original equipment wheel. If air goes out of a tire, it is much more likely to leak out slowly. The vehicle can slip off the jack and roll over or fall on you or other people. Base Models 1. Base Model 2. Lift the trunk liner and place the plastic hook in the lip of the trunk lid. Page 3. Remove the nut that holds down the spare tire. See Compact Spare Tire on page 4. Gently pull it up and out of the trunk.
Page Uplevel Model 3. Remove the wing nut that retains the jack and the spare tire. Page You will need to turn the plastic wheel nut counterclockwise to loosen the wheel wrench from the jack. If your vehicle is equipped with plastic wheel covers, use the wheel wrench to loosen the plastic wheel nut caps.
Page 5. Put the compact spare tire near you. Page 9. Remove any rust or dirt from the wheel bolts, mounting surfaces and spare wheel. Place the compact spare tire on the wheel-mounting surface. If you do, the nuts might come loose. Your wheel could fall off, causing a serious accident. If you try to put a wheel cover on the compact spare, you could damage the cover or the spare. Reattach the wheel wrench to the jack. Screw the stow bolt extension rod and the sleeve into the existing spare tire hold-down bolt. Some are toxic. Some are dangerous if their fumes are inhaled in an enclosed space. To clean, use the following instructions: 1. For liquids: blot with a clean, soft, white cloth.
For solids: remove as much as possible and then vacuum or brush. Apply club soda water to a clean, soft, white cloth. Do not over-saturate; Page Vinyl Vinyl Use warm water and a clean cloth. This may have to be done more than once.
Use a clean cloth and vinyl cleaner. If you do, it may severely weaken them. In a crash, they might not be able to provide adequate protection. Rinse with clean water. After rinsing thoroughly, dry with a soft clean towel. A wax may then be applied. Tar and Road Removes tar, road oil and Oil Remover asphalt. Chrome Cleaner Use on chrome or and Polish stainless steel. You can see it if you look through the windshield from outside your vehicle.

The first documentation of this "stern first" technique in Grand Canyon was by George Flavell in With the introduction of the outboard motor the "semi-dory" or "half-dory" was developed.
Because typical dory bottoms are so narrow, the thrust of an outboard motor pushes the stern of the dory down creating a very unstable and inefficient boat. The semi-dory is basically a Swampscott dory with the stern widened and the rocker straightened aft to support the thrust of the outboard motor.
Other, less but traditional types were the double ended surf and gunning dories. The pointed bow and sterns made these boats excel at launching through the surf. Gunning dories were built quite light in comparison to the more traditionally constructed beach dories.
The "dory skiff" is another variation of the dory type. For inshore work the transom was widened, and freeboard was lowered making an exceptionally easy-to-row boat that was more stable initial stability not ultimate stability than their offshore cousins.
