Narrow channel - Shipping lanes - Approaching large vessel | ACE BOATER
A real boater recollects the time he was aboard his small boat, drift-fishing in the shipping lanes at night, and almost run down by a freighter. Learn the lessons this boater learned from this adventure in true life. As teenagers growing up in a small village on Long Island Sound, 30 miles east of the busy Port of New York, my friends and I spent most of our summers swimming, fishing and boating during the daylight hours. We completed all of the boating safety courses and had hands-on boat-handling training by our elders. Official subreddit for Shipping Lanes on Roblox! These shipping lanes form a traffic management route system in very busy sea areas and are ruled by the International Maritime Organisation or IMO. The systems are referred to as Traffic Separation Schemes or TSSs. How do TSSs work? Rule 10 (f) - A vessel navigating in areas near the terminations of traffic separation schemes shall do so with particular caution. Cross the Shipping Lanes if you have to, making sure that you have done your preparation, you know the rules that apply, your boat is well equipped and in good condition and you dont leave inexperienced crew in charge while you take a kip.

The weather was great yesterday so I decided to put in an evening fish for Hali, not too far from port. I got out, set anchor and deployed my gear.

This spot is adjacent to the shipping lanes but not in them. When I got there I saw 4 boats North of my position, clearly anchored in the shipping lanes. As the evening progressed, all but one of the 4 boats left.

Further out in the Straits I saw a ship getting closer. Soon it was apparent it was a laden oil tanker, with a tug escort heading for Rosario. I figured the small boat anchored in the East bound shipping lanes would move as the massive tanker approached. After what looked to be a very close and uncomfortable pass I hear the guy in the Hewes on the radio saying he could not pull his anchor in time. Then I hear someone transmit "that is why you don't anchor in the shipping lanes", to which the guy in the Hewes responds, "well just run me over next time then".

I was so tempted to chime in with something pertaining to Darwin but refrained. So first off it goes without saying it is not a good idea to anchor in the shipping lanes, not to mention it is against maritime law. A ' tanker does not have great maneuvering ability and has substantial draft especially when laden. Second you need to have a way to get loose of your anchor quickly in an emergency. This is why I advocate a cockpit deployed anchor system with a scottsman buoy.

With a lift or cut of a rope you can float free quickly when rigged properly. I hope this guy learned a lesson Small Pontoon Boats Under 13.5 Feet Mod but I have my doubts. Oh and here is my hali report, nada, just a dogfish that chewed the tentacles off my B2 squid. It was a gorgeous night to be out though! Reactions: TonyG , dragonballs , Eddy C and 6 others.

From the Rules of the Road Rule 10 - Traffic Separation Schemes a This Rule applies to traffic separation schemes [ adopted by the Organization ] and does not relieve any vessel of her obligation under any other rule. However, vessels of less than 20 meters in length, sailing vessels and vessels engaged in fishing may use the inshore traffic zone. Reactions: Wild Bill. I am constantly baffled by the stupidity of people on the water.

Yep if the guy had been in an Xtaero this would have never happened.

I think the Hewes comments were meant tongue in cheek Greg no malice intended. Reactions: TonyG , dragonballs , Barracuda1 and 4 others. Ya that's it.. I mean every time I turn around a Hewes is going down. Wait, they technically don't go down, they can float upside down. Or maybe its because they out sell most other boats in the NW. Regardless of boat type it comes down to operator ability and knowledge. The boaters ed program is a joke and teaches nothing about how to properly operate a boat.

I honestly wish everyone that operates a boat would have to go through a shortened version of the USCG captains class. I hate running my boat in crowded areas because most people don't have a clue of the rules of the road, crossing, overtaking or otherwise Sundodger Fishing is fun. Is that how one is supposed to operate a throttle???? I say what a retard, but I don't want to put retards down but grouping them with this idiot!

Reactions: mrfish Sounds like someone who fishes bouy 10 to me I will just come right out and admit it I was sort of rooting for the containership to make a darwin award out of this jackwagon.

Seems like the world would be a better place without people who do stupid shit like that. FHisherman Member. I skew the opposite of the Jackwagon subject of the thread and stay as far away from those big rigs as possible.

They don't have brakes and may not have a Captain who cares enough to even try to alter course. Especially out in the Ocean. Reactions: WaterOps and Elkfins. KimH Someday I'll live the dream. FHisherman said:. Elkfins Ungrateful Prick. TunaHore said:. Reactions: TunaHore , Walker Inc.
