There are 17 designs as usual varying in type and style from the traditional Black Swan to the more modern Ailsa - there are study plans A1 sheets with sections, construction details and a wood materials list, for most of these designs - for further information please see the price list on the main page.

Please also note that we give the computer faired mould, inner stem and transom shapes plus the building jig details for clinker ply construction where stated and recommend that the builder purchases a good manual on this method of construction to use with these details. Simplicity 20' Particulars LOD 20' 6. For your money. Add to this type of hull a simple box ballast keel filled with scrap iron and cement and you have a very seaworthy, inexpensive and quickly built design.

The construction drawings are for Foam Sandwich Fibreglass building. However, the design can easily be adapted for simple ply construction and the keel arrangement may be altered to bilge or centreboard we will be very pleased to advice and supply drawings for any modifications to any of our designs.

Pioneer 21 Particulars LOD 20'6" 6. Below is a strip planked version by Steve Cormack. Uses disposable sand or gravel ballast. Based upon the North American working sharpie. May be built with centreboard. Construction is similar to our Song Thrush using pre-shaped ply bulkheads and girders locked together with the hull bottom panel to form a strong prefabricated structure to which the sides are added.

The starting point for the design was the requirement for a trailable boat with comfortable internal living space for 2 with a large and practicable cockpit area.

The rig had to be both efficient and easy to use from the cockpit and she had to carry a large outboard for motoring out to sailing grounds. Clinker ply construction using 7 planks per side was chosen to give the hull a sweet appearance which was fairly easy to construct details and plank shapes are also given for stitch and epoxy construction and she could be strip planked.

For easy trailing she has twin pivoted bilge boards which do not encroach on the accommodation and are housed under the bunks and she carries some water ballast. The layout could be re arranged to take more berths. She has a foredeck well and she carries a gunter yawl rig for good balance under reduced sail. Dry Weight lbs kg Ballast lbs kg Maximum Headroom 4'10" 1.

They may not have had as much room inside as their modern counterparts, but they were sea kindly craft with an easily handled rig and a grace and charm all of their own. She has 6 plywood planks per side which are stitched together along with the ply backbone girder and bulkheads.

All the seams and joints are then bonded with epoxy and the hull sheathed in woven roving. The centreboard pivot is located outside the hull so that there are no leaks.

Ballast, in the form of scrap iron or lead is housed in 2 steel ballast boxes to keep cost down and to make the engineering side of the construction as simple as possible. She has room for 2 or 3 berths, a wc and galley and she can have an outboard well in the cockpit.

Her yawl rig, apart from being traditional, is in easily handled balanced areas allowing her to be sailed with just the jib and mizzen up. We can also produce the computer faired mould shapes and details for strip planked construction.

Other keel configurations can also be drawn up. First of all, the pre-shaped ply bottom panel and longitudinal girders are put together with frames and bulkheads.

To make things really simple, the hull side frames are all based upon one master curve and once set up, the sides are constructed from strip planks no more than an inch wide, bonded with epoxy. The drawing shows a central ballast keel or centreboard options and the accommodation can be arranged to suit. There is an outboard well aft and she will take up to, 4 berths. The centreboard version lends itself to car trailing.

Skye 21' Particulars LOD 20'6" 6. Davies of Wales - the photos below are of an example built by Toni Reiter of Holland. The attractive little SKUA has been designed for trailer sailing. She has the option of carrying salt water ballast in 2 tanks built-in to the boat and giving her a total ballast weight of kg.

She has 2 comfortable berths a w. She has an outboard well and a deep safe cockpit and foredeck well. The gaff sloop rig is mounted in a tabernacle and her centreboard arrangement has been designed so as not to encroach on the cabin space, is raised from the cockpit and pivoted outside the hull to prevent leaks.

There is a choice of two methods of construction - the computer faired mould shapes are given for strip planked construction and the panel shapes and details are given for ply epoxy construction. LOA 6. Details are included for a schooner bowed cutter version with a larger volume hull - details are also included for a lug rig and bilge boards. The lovely example below is by John Gray. Pre-fabricated plywood sections are used for the basic hull structure allowing a lot of the construction to be done in small easily handled units before the whole hull is put together.

Much of the initial construction can therefore be started well away from the final assembly site. The standard layout has four berths and a galley in an open plan arrangement with a separate w. Trailing is made easy because she has a mast mounted in a tabernacle and simple lifting bilge boards rather than a fixed keel.

The boards are a larger version of those used in our Lynx 14 design and work in slots outboard of the main accommodation using a hoist arrangement which is controlled from the cockpit. To keep the trailing weight down the ballast is divided between permanent solid ballast and water ballast tanks which are filled once the boat has been launched.

The design could take different keel and ballast options if required. Ailsa 22 Particulars LOD 22' 6. Dry Weight lbs kg Ballast - solid Ballast - water lbs lbs kg kg Maximum Headroom 5'3" 1. Construction is for strip planking over computer faired mould shapes. She has an inboard engine as well as a swing keel which does not intrude into the cabin space. The cockpit is large and the cabin is laid out generously for 2 crew.

This nice example is by Allen Deans. This particular example has accommodation which includes 3 or 4 berths, a galley and a Porta-Potti w. There are 2 keel alternatives - one with a centreplate which is kept below the cabin sole and the other with a deeper fixed keel allowing you to install an inboard engine. The cabin is taken right out to the sides of the hull to give comfortable sitting space below.

Initially the rig is based upon a simple standing lug rig set on lightweight masts and spars, but she could take other rigs - details of an alternative gaff cutter rig are included.

Computer faired mould shapes are given for strip planking the hull which has firm bilges ending in a sweet full wineglass shaped transom. LOD 23'6" 7. The drawings now show details for side decks and a gaff cutter rig. See the Photo Gallery page for further photos plus a drawing of the Beaumaris.

It is known as one of yachting's most dangerous races and is fought by boats with a maximum length of 6. We have been asked to draw up a design for a Canadian client which uses standard stitch and tape building methods with non exotic materials for amateur construction. She incorporates water ballast along with a lead ballasted bulb on a high aspect ratio keel, inclined twin rudders and built-buoyancy.

Whilst designed for a specific race, she would provide fast exciting sailing in coastal waters the keel can be raised for easy transport and has room for more than the 2 berths shown. LOD 21'4" 6. Transat 6. Construction is ply over frame with the frames, girders etc set-up on a strongback. LOD 23'7" 7. Added to the standard plan set are two drawings, one giving the details for a gaff sloop rig and the other for a steam plant installation as an auxiliary.

Dry Weight lbs kg Ballast lbs kg Maximum Headroom 4' 1. There are 2 steel bilge plates which are housed in the bunk fronts and the junk mast is hinged in a tabernacle for easy lowering.

Steering etc is set up for control from inside the yacht although there is a cockpit and outboard well. Dry Weight lbs kg Ballast lbs kg Maximum Headroom 6'1" 1. She has 3 berths and space for a small galley and wc compartment. The cockpit is generous in size and could take a boom tent. The cabin top lifts to give more headroom. Construction is for Cedar strip planking over computer faired moulds.

There is space for a small inboard engine in the forepeak which could be connected hydraulically to a prop. To WL lbs kg ; Approx. Weight lbs kg ; Ballast lbs kg ; Sail Area sq. Dry Weight lbs kg Ballast lbs kg Maximum Headroom 4'4" 5'5" with top lifted 1. I was eventually commissioned to do the drawings for a 23' version and jumped at the chance - so here she is. The original 30' Martlet was drawn up for clinker plywood construction over a fairly extensive ply framework and then strip plank construction details wwere added at a later date.

With her 23' sister, we start off with strip plank construction and eventually, when someone asks for it, ply construction either clinker or multi-chine will almost certainly be added to the design package.

So, as usuall the computer faired mould, inner stem and transom shapes are given to be set up on a strongback before planking starts. The planking could be done in a number of ways - single Cedar with a glass sheathing, a thinner Cedar core with 1 or 2 veneers on the outside etc.

Even cold-moulded if you want - we can give advice on relevant scantlings for the method you choose although a single Cedar strip sheathed in glass is specified on the plans. The accommodation is laid out with forward 'V' berths, a small wc compartment and galley opposite and then a further two pilot berths aft. For those wanting the plans printed and posted to them the postal charges are:.
